NPC Member Urges Strict Implementation of New Law to Tackle Soil Pollution

Dec. 28, 2018

Shen Yueyue, vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress(NPC), gave a speech in Beijing on December 12 during her attendance at a conference on the implementation of the country's law on the prevention of soil pollution.

The conference was jointly held by the NPC Environmental Protection and Resources Conservation Committee and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment.

Shen, who is also president of the All-China Women's Federation, said the law on soil pollution prevention and control will come into force on January 1, 2019.

Shen emphasized that the promulgation and implementation of such a law is an important measure taken by China to better act on President Xi Jinping's thoughts regarding ecological civilization and to follow relevant major decisions and arrangements made by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

Shen continued that the new law has further improved China's legislation on ecological and environmental protection and provided legal support for actual work carried out to prevent soil pollution.

Relevant authorities and individuals should be fully aware of the importance of the law on soil pollution prevention and control, promote the study and publicity of the law amongst the public, speed up their efforts in the making of various supporting legal regulations, and strengthen their judicial enforcement work, she said.

Shen also urged people's congresses at various levels to better perform their supervisory duties and ensure effective implementation of the law.
